Gavin Harper EN106 - First Year Writing Seminar II June 19, 2011 Paulo Freire and Education as a liberating Tool In “The Banking Concept of Education”, Freire supports a teaching method in which the individual will cultivate knowledge through daily situations in his or her life, which will provide useful experiences that will promote learning opportunities. Freire argues that only thru meaningful learning experiences can the individual acquire the knowledge he or she needs to be free of oppression and to be able to be an agent of change to the world in which he or she lives. Freire begins by outlining the issues he has with narration as a traditional teaching method, which he deems ‘oppressive’ since it does not make the individual an active part of the process. By not making the individual an active part of this process, he then becomes a “patient, listening object”(p1), which denotes a sense of dehumanization by the teachers towards the
