Chapter 3 Study Guide Cells Name Revised OVERVIEW This chapter deals with the basic unit of structure of the human body-the cell. It explains the makeup of a composite cell and the contribution of each of the organelles to cellular function (objectives 1, 2, and 4). It introduces the various mechanisms used to transport material into and out of the cell (objectives 3 and 6). The process of cell reproduction and the factors that control cell reproduction (objectives 5, 7, 8, and 9) are discussed. An understanding of cell structure is basic to understanding how cells support life at the cellular and organismic levels. STUDY ACTIVITIES I. Aids to Understanding Words Define the following word parts. cyt- ( cell cytoplasm ) iso- ( equal ) lys- ( to break up ) hyper- ( above ) hypo- ( below ) inter- ( between ) mit- ( thread ) phag- ( to eat ) pino- ( to drink ) -som ( body ) II. Introduction A. An adult human body consists of about (50 to 100 trilliom ) cells. B. There are at least ( 260 ) varieties of cells. C. Cells are measured in units called (micrometer ) D. How many µm are in a cm? ( 10,000 ) a meter? ( 1,000,000 ) E. Compare the sizes of red and white blood cells. 7.5micrometers in red blood cells and 10- 12micrometers in white blood cells F. Compare the blood cells with the mature ovum or a large smooth muscle fiber. ( 1 ) How many of these four cell types are visible with the naked eye? G. Biologists often discuss the relationship between form and function . What shape would you expect a skeletal muscle fiber found in your biceps to be? ( slender and rod like ) The shape of cells which make up your cheek lining? ( thin, flatted and tightly packed ) The cells forming the nerve fiber running to your thumb? ( threadlike extensions ) III. A Composite Cell A. Introduction 1. Why is it difficult to describe a cell found in our body? (because they vary greatly. Size, shape, content, function ) 2. What are some functions that a cell must be able to complete to help us function? ( support, protect, transport, control, contain ) 3-1

3. All cells will have many things in common. For instance, all will have, at least at some point in their life cycle, three major components; the (nucleus ) , the ( cell membrane ), and ( cytoplasm ) . 4. The most visible internal structure/organelle is the (nucleus ). 5. Surrounding it is a semifluid region called the ( cytoplasm ) which contains many specialized structures. 6. Together, the structures and fluid form the cell’s ( cytosol ) 7. The fluid is contained within a specific region by a surrounding ( cell membrane ) . 8. Specialized structures within the cytoplasm are called ( cytoplasmic organelles ) B. Cell Membrane 1. General Characteristics The cell membrane is more than a “Ziploc” surrounding the contents of the cell. It has many important functions. List at least 4 different things which the membrane does which are vital to a cell’s life. ( metabolic reactions )
