Decisions regarding birth control affect reproductive health by giving you a choice as to when you’re ready to have children. There are risks and benefits associated with each type of birth control so it is important to choose the method right for you and your health by researching the various methods available. The following are some examples of birth control methods along with their risks and benefits. Latex and polyurethane male Condoms and the female Condom , when used correctly for oral sex or intercourse, provide the most effective protection in preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. Spermicides containing nonoxynol 9 (N-9) are not effective in preventing some STI’s such as Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and HIV. In fact, frequent use of spermicides containing nonoxynol 9 has been shown to cause irritation and breaks in the mucous layer or skin of the genital tract, creating a point of entry for viruses and bacteria that cause disease.
