Chapter 6 MCDB Reading Notes: too much amyloid beta = Alzheimer lipids create an effective barrier to the rapid passage of hydrophilic materials carbohydrates are either attached to the lipids or the protein molecules In plasma membranes carbohydrates are located on the outside of the cell where they ,ay interact with substances in the external environment All biological membranes contain proteins: in the mitochondria there is one protein for every 15 lipids There are two general types of membrane proteins: peripheral membrane proteins: lack exposes hydrophobic groups and are not embedded in the bilayer, they have polar or charged regions that interact with exposed parts of the integral membrane proteins or with the polar heads of phospholipid molecules. Integral membrane proteins: are at least partly embedded in the phospholipid bilayer this region has both hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions hydrophilic- polar hydrophobic- nonpolar some proteins are free to migrate freely the position of the membrane is determined by their tertiary structure A glycolipid consists of a carbohydrate covalently bonded to a lipid. A glycoprotein consists of a carbohydrate covalently bonded to a protein. Carbohydrates are bound to lipids and proteins Unicellular-the entire organism is a single cell (bacteria) Two processes allow cells to arrange themselves in groups: Cell recognition: one cell specifically binds to another cell of a certain type Cell adhesion: the connection between the two cells is strengthened Chapter 6.2.1: Cell recognition and cell adhesion involve proteins at the cell surface:
