B OX AND W HISKER P LOTS A box and whisker plot (or boxplot ) shows the middle half of the values in a data set – what we call the interquartile range – as a box and then draws lines, or whiskers, extending to the left and right from the box to indicate the remaining 50 percent of the data items. A box and whisker plot uses a five-number summary ; the minimum value (Min x ), the lower quartile (Q1), the median (Q2), the upper quartile (Q3), and the maximum value (Max x ). The lower and upper quartiles form the box, while whiskers are drawn from either side to the minimum and maximum values. Outliers are values that are extremely large or extremely small compared to the rest of the data. Ex . Find the five number summary for the data series below and use it to draw a box and whisker plot. 4 7 6 3 9 6 2 9 5 7 3 2 On the calculator, enter the data into L1, then press STAT, CALC, 1 Var Stats L1 and read off the five-number summary.
