Psychology Notes Chapter 14 Personality o Personality is the pattern of psychological and behavioral characteristics by which each person can be compared and contrasted with others o Major Approaches to Personality Psychodynamic Sigmund Freud Basic Tenets: o Constant internal mental struggle o Unconscious processes influence behavior The drama of Personality Structure o Main elements ID (pleasure principle)- selfish, childish, little kids only have ids, satisfies urges, id is evil. EGO (reality principle)- is more patient and wants to wait so you don’t get caught. Still evil, but uses the reality of the situation. You can’t always get what you want. The ego tries to mediate the conflicting demands of the id and superego. SUPEREGO (morality principle)- says you shouldn’t do things that are not okay. Makes you feel guilty. o Most of you mind is hidden, like an ice berg Personality Development o Resolve conflicts at each psychological stage of become fixated at that stage ( have unresolved and continued conflicts)
