1. Alfred Loisy (1857-1940), a French Roman Catholic priest, professor, and theologian famously wrote, “Jesus preached the Kingdom of God, but we wound up with the Church” ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Loisy ). I think this is somewhat cynical statement was designed to reveal an important truth. Not only had Loisy observed a gulf between what Jesus originally taught and what he saw in the church, but he also observed that the emphasis had been changed from the Kingdom to the church. This quote resonates with me. I'm on a spiritual quest, and as such, I'm drawn to the historical Jesus who preached God's Kingdom - and not the church which emphasized the risen Christ. Jesus gave us the church for us to worship God since we cannot see the Kingdom of God. 2. We can apply in many ways Loisy’s statement to the “kingdoms” preached by Moses, Muhammad, and Guru Nanak. The spiritual impact of Moses, Muhammad, or Guru Nanak is seen not only from their works and teachings but it is also reflected in the effects that the example of their lives has on
