Owen, II THEO202_B05_200930 Short Essay # 1 Short Essay: The Role of Women in the Church Your friend Mary wants to be involved in ministry at her church; before she commits, she has a few questions about the role of women in the church in light of the debate between egalitarianism and complementarianism. Women in the place of families, society, work place, and the church have been a topic of debate and controversy for centuries. From the beginning God created Adam first, made him the central character, God formed woman out of man, and God made woman for man. Adam exercised his God-given leadership in naming Eve. Before the fall, Adam named his new companion "woman" ( Gen.2:23 ) which is a generic name, not a personal name. After the fall, Adam named his wife "Eve" ( Gen.3:20 ) which is a personal name. God commanded Adam not Eve to refrain from eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil ( Gen.2:16-17 ). There is a hint of Adam's leadership in that God possibly commissioned Adam to instruct Eve about this
