Unformatted text preview: Joseph Arabbo Dr. Tait Final Exam Essay 23 May 2011 I have had some experience with jazz music. I played in jazz band from 5 th grade to 12 th grade as drummer. I am familiar with the elements, music theory, instruments, and artists in jazz music. Taking this course has solidified my knowledge, however, of the art of listening to jazz, not just playing it. The discussions we had to post had made me thoroughly involved in the music we were studying in each module. Although a Christian, I wasn’t very familiar with the history or evolution of sacred/religious music. I am, however, familiar with the Chaldean Church hymns, but those vary greatly from the ones we have studied. The lectures and PowerPoint presentation, along with the listening examples gave me a new- found appreciation for religious music and the way it was composed. I always had the perception of religious music being slow and boring. Gospel music was anything but boring.
