Joseph Arabbo 29 April 2011 MUS100 Dr. Tait MUS100 Review of “Senior Showcase 2011” MUSICIANS The concert began with the lights of the Ceremonial candles. The speaker welcomed us and introduced the musicians. During the introduction, the speaker mentioned that the musicians had learned to play their instruments from family members as well as professional teachers called Gurus. These gurus of theirs are highly trained musicians whose job is to teach them everything they know. Shashank Subramanyam, the flute player, was nominated for many Grammy awards during his career. Akkarai Subbalakshmi, the violinist is a popular carnatic violinist performs with her sister as the Akkarai sisters in New Delhi, India. Parupalli Phalgun, the mridangam drum player, comes from a renowned family of musicians in southern India. INSTRUMENTS The Mridangam drum, also called the Kanjira, and resembles the sound of a talking drum that we heard in our lectures. The mridangam is tuned to the tone of the drone in background, played by the tambura. The mridangam player hits the drum and tunes it to the note of the drone each time it’s time for him to play new songs with a different drone. All instruments during the performance were played while sitting down, which is the traditional position for Indian Classical music. The bamboo flute used in Indian Carnatic classical music is played with a portamento effect or technique,
