Ivan Salinas CIVE 4369/Special Assignment 03/22/2010 1. Summarize the methods used for improving site soils for foundation use. The methods used for improving site soils are as follows: mechanical stabilization, compaction, preloading, drainage, densification using vibratory equipment, use of situ reinforcement, grouting, use of geotextiles, and chemical stabilization. Mechanical stabilization includes the use of binder material when the site is predominantly gravel (75mm down to 1mm). The binder fills the voids and usually adds mass cohesion. Granular soil is imported and blended with the site soil if soil is predominantly cohesive. Compaction consists of rolling equipment, most economical, compacting the soil achieving particle packing for both cohesionless and cohesive soils. Preloading and drainage methods are usually combined and are capable of increasing the shear strength. Preloading reduces future settlement and drainage is used to speed up settlement under preloading. Densification using vibratory equipment consists of a type of vibrating probe inserted into the soil mass and withdrawn. This method is useful in sand, silty sand, and gravelly sand deposits with D r less than about 50 to 60 percent. Use of in situ reinforcement method is used with stone, sand, cement, or lime columns which produces composite ground. Sometimes plastic fibers or fiberglass is added to the mixed soil for strength improvement. Fiber material must be adequate durable in the hostile soil environment. Grouting is the injection of a viscous fluid to reduce the void ratio which consists of water and cement or water and lime sometimes with additives such as fine sand, bentonite clay, or fly ash. The additives reduce costs and enhance certain desired effects. Use of geotextiles mainly used as reinforcement but sometimes in other beneficial
