David R. Patrick ENGL 1102 Prof. Bickley P3 D1 November 4, 2010 “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” I woke up to the sound of someone beating on my front door. I answer the door to find a sheriff’s deputy at the door. The deputy asked me if I knew the man that was in the back of his patrol car. I walked out to the car and my grandfather was in the back of the car. Once I got Papa back inside I started talking to him to find out what had happened. His Alzheimer’s was in full swing and he did not remember anything about the day. As we sat there I watched him and tried to think about what he must being going through; I tried to think about what he was thinking, or if he was thinking anything at all. “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” was written in 1933 by Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway was born in Illinois in 1899. He skipped college and joined the Army during World War I. After the war Hemingway spent the majority of his life in France. In 1961 Hemingway committed suicide. Hemingway is known as one of the best short story authors in history, his timeless
