David R. Patrick ENGL 1102 Prof. Bickley P3 D1 November 4, 2010 Growing Old in “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” I woke up to the sound of someone beating on my front door. I answer the door to find a sheriff’s deputy looking troubled. at the door. The deputy asked me if I knew the man that was in the back of his patrol car. I walked out to the car and my grandfather , buck a%# naked was in the back of the car . Once I got Papa back inside I started talking to him to find out what had happened. His Alzheimer’s was in full swing and he did not remember anything about the day. As we sat there I watched him and tried to think about what he must being going through; I tried to think about what he was going through his mind thinking , or if he was thinking anything at all. “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” was written in 1933 by Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway was born in Illinois in 1899. He skipped college and joined the Army during World War I. After the war Hemingway spent the majority of his life in France. In 1961 Hemingway committed suicide (maybe reference why) . Hemingway is known as one of the best short story authors in history, his timeless works have continued to be popular and critically acclaimed will be read until the end of time . “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” is about the contrast between the ages of three men: a young waiter, and older waiter, and an old man. The old man comes to the restaurant every evening and sits there and drinks while the waiters wait on him to finish his business (change phrase) and leave the restaurant. I will discuss three themes from Hemingway’s story in this paper. I will discuss solidarity, mortality, the different conduct of Hemingway’s characters and alcohol in Hemingway’s writing.
