Intro Sociology (SOCI 1101) Spring 2011 Exam 2 Review Sheet Reading Questions: Be sure you are familiar with each reading assignment (CVR: 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, and 35) Essay: On the exam, I will ask you four (4) and you will answer one (1) . Note: these questions are also designed to help you better understand all of the material on the exam. 1. First, discuss the 4 tenets of the American Dream. Second, how can this (or any ideology) be used as a form of social control? 2. First, discuss the things that all cultures share (cultural universals). Second, choose two of these universal characteristics and provide examples of how different cultures have different forms of these universals. 3. Describe the characteristics of primary groups (Dunphy reading). Why are primary groups important for the broader society? 4. Analyze group formation using our three theoretical perspectives. 5. How are identity and social identity similar and different? What does it mean to say that identity is “worked on?” Provide at least one example.
