In the United States, we do not need to plan for retirement. Social Security will cover our needs when we are retired. What is Social Security? Social Security is a state-run system that providing financial support for people who are unemployed, sick, retired, or otherwise in need of financial assistance. The Social Security Act of 1935, the foundation for most federal welfare provisions and one of the most important pieces of legislation in the United States history, has been widely misunderstood. The title phrase “Social Security”, came to refer in general usage to only one of the eleven major sections or titles in the act, old age pensions, the nation’s most popular welfare program. Americans have always had to deal with poverty and Social Security just is not a reliable source of income for people over the age of 65 or under that age. Citizens of the United States should plan for retirement instead of relying on Social Security because Social Security could run out of money, the population is severely high and still growing, and Social Security does not give enough money to cover needs. In my essay, I plan to show people we should not rely on Social Security when we retire and options that we can take, in the future, to help plan for retirement.
