2 RELATION OF THE BIG FIVE FACTORS TO THE DISPOSITIONAL AND COGNITIVE DOMAINS This paper will discuss personality traits, specifically the big-five personality factors, and how they relate to the dispositional and cognitive domains of personality psychology. The big- five factors are extroversion/extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism or emotional stability, and openness to experience. Work leading towards the five factor model started based on the lexical and statistical approaches. Almost eighteen-thousand trait terms in the dictionary were broken down into categories. One of these categories, “stable traits” was then categorized even further. The categories eventually were eventually narrowed down to twenty-two. Using factor analysis, these twenty-two factors led to finding the five factor solution that has been replicated many times ever since. The cognitive domain of psychology concerns all the things involved in human cognition, which are our mental abilities. This includes things like perceiving, learning, remembering, thinking, reasoning, and understanding. Most of the discussion in the paper relating to cognition deals with traits in the five factor model predicting mental abilities. The dispositional domain of psychology concerns all the things in our personality that are relatively consistent and stable over situations and time and what makes people different from one another. Work in the dispositional domain is related to finding underlying traits in human behavior. The five factor model is a product of work in the dispositional domain since it seeks to find the building blocks of that combine to form all types of human personality. Most of the discussion in this paper about the dispositional domain will cover trait stability and manifestation in behavior. The five factor model can be found in all the domains of personality psychology in some form or another, but can easily be related to the cognitive and dispositional domains. Possessing certain traits of the five factor model can predict certain forms of cognition according to many studies. Understanding whether or not certain do or do not predict certain
