Chinese Exclusion Act 1. Is the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 constitutional? I do not believe that this was constitutional by any means. Does the Constitution envision this role of the federal government in domestic affairs of the United States? I agree with some of the other people other people, that when the Constitution was written it did not name race specifically, yet the people writing this, were all white. "Life, Liberty and the Prosperity" The African Americans did not reach the end of slavery until the Emancipation Proclamation in final form on January 1, 1863. This did not end slavery completely at this time. There was still much that had to happen before they were granted citizenship. 2. Why did people fear Chinese immigration? Chinese emigrated, occupied jobs, and created competition on the job market. the first Chinese immigrants were wealthy, successful merchants, along with skilled artisans, fishermen, and hotel and restaurant owners before the Chinese Exclusion Act.
