Unformatted text preview: COM 114 Mass Media Exploring Violence in Media & Violence in Society Directions: Watch the movie "Bowling for Columbine" by Michael Moore, then answer the questions below. 1.Michael Moore opens a bank account so that he can get what item instead of interest? Michael Moore opens the bank account because he saw an ad in a Michigan Newspaper, stating that if you opened an account with them, that you could get a free rifle/gun and when he went he was told that on a daily basis in their vault that they kept at least 500 guns, and they were a gun dealer as well. 2. Who were some of the people/things blamed for the tragedy at Columbine? The people and things that were blamed for the tragedy at Columbine were pretty narrow-minded stating angry teens and the heavy metal subculture, violent movies, South Park, violence on tv, satan, cartoons, society, toy guns, drugs, and Marilyn Manson, Marilyn Manson and yet again Marilyn Manson. 3.What other countries besides ours have violent pasts? Germany, Japan, French and British are the other countries that are known to have violent pasts. 4.Who is the most common suspect on television? Violence on television, cartoons and South Park. 5.Who most often gets in trouble for gun possession? Kids in the city or kids in the suburbs? Yes kids in the big cities are known to have guns, yet it is the teens in the suburbs that get themselves into major trouble with guns, and much of them have been stolen. 6.Who conditions people in the United States to believe that their communities are dangerous? Television media leads people to believe that there is more crime then there really is. One person stated that crime has actually gone down 20%, yet the coverage of the media has increased by 600%. Why is it that when the crime does down, television coverage increases? 7.What does the former TV producer of Cops say sells in the media? In the interview with Dick Herlon, he states that he is a liberal. Anger, hate and violence does well in television ratings. White collar crimes are not treated the same as other crimes. He states that he is not trying to demonize the African Americans and Hispanics population, yet these are the populations that are shown on Cops more often then not.population, yet these are the populations that are shown on Cops more often then not....
