http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn20094-hackers-could-track-the-person-behind-your- usernames.html The topic of the week for me is about hackers being able to track the person behind your usernames. When researching out topics for this week’s assignment, I wasn’t finding anything at first, and when I found this, I was very interested, since the study was done by Symantec, which creates anti-virus programs. The article gave me a sense that the company that is trying to secure computers is trying to stay ahead of these ingenious hackers. I was amazed, and I know that I shouldn’t be, by the things that hackers can do, and the deviousness that is behind such things. It was interesting to read that Symantec was behind this study that was done. They used such a large number of usernames in their study (10 million), and that they used comparisons with 3 different major websites. It was stated that they could come up with correlations between different usernames that people use. There is another link to this article, http://planete.inrialpes.fr/projects/how-unique-are-your-usernames/ that will give you some insight from their research if there is correlations between your usernames. I was most definitely intrigued by this seemingly simple algorhyum. There are even able to put a numerical number to the statically chance that the two usernames that you input could be used by the same person. I enjoyed reading of this article, and believe that this is something that could and maybe should be used
