3Chapter 5 Child Care Child Care Daycare - the care given to children by persons other than parents during the parts of the day that parents are absent Extended Day Care- child care provided for children before or after school hours or during vacations Some statistics: 80% of children age 5 and younger with employed mothers are in a child-care arrangement for an average of almost 40 hours a week with someone other than a parent and 60% of children ages 6-14 spend an average of 21 hours per week in nonparental care before and after school In the mid-70’s, 30% of moms with children under age 6 worked outside the home; by the year 2000, that has more than doubled. Only 45% of working parents have guaranteed unpaid parental leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993. Components of Optimal Quality Care- National Day Care Study (1979)- provided objective definitions by examining physical and social aspects of the child care setting with the purpose of constructing national child care standards; what are the key components that best predict good outcomes for children; these are: Group Size- smaller groups provide a more intimate setting; smaller groups = more social interaction with the teacher Ratios of Adult:Child- with smaller ratios, teachers are better able to meet the needs of all the children Training- critical- caregivers with specialized training in child development and DAP have a more authoritative rather than authoritarian attitude, use more planned activities, are less stressed, and communicate more with parents Good practices results in children being more cooperative, more involved in tasks, more talkative and more creative and made more gains in cognitive tasks; sadly, typical quality is still well below what is considered good practice by child development, psych, and educ specialists Poor quality linked to lack of education (caregivers don’t have the skills they need), high staff turnover (children must continually adapt to new caregivers), low staff compensation (compensation is significantly related to quality of care provided) What socialization outcomes can we find for children experiencing a good quality child care program (safe, stimulating play environment with trained adults): cooperative play, sociability, ability to resolve conflicts, self-control, and language and cognitive development What do parents look for?- availability and affordability and ease of communication with caregivers (parents prefer informal and frequent communication)
