Engineering Concordia University SOEN228 Computer Hardware Tutorial Date: Week of January 10, 2011 The tutorial should introduce Lab 1, for about 1hour if necessary, by referring to the lab manual. In the second hour I suggest a discussion of material in the first part of assignment 1. In the following, I give the first questions, followed by some tutorial examples aligned on these questions. Assignment Question: Question 1 For the following hexadecimal number, give the decimal equivalent as a signed integer. (a) C6h For the following hexadecimal numbers give the equivalent in ASCII characters. (b) 31373938h (c) Adjust the parity bit to give even parity to the ASCII characters in (b), and rewrite them in hexadecimal. Tutorial discussion (a)For the following hexadecimal number, give the decimal equivalent as a signed integer. A7h 1001 0111 2’s complement 0110 1000 +1= 0110 1001 = - 69h or -105 For the following hexadecimal numbers give the equivalent in ASCII characters. (b) 6A5875
