Some movements like temperance and improving mental hospitals had support nation wide, but other causes like abolitionists and womens rights had only regional supports Some groups felt it was necessary to use government to make changes, others secluded themselves Utopian communities in America o Some dictatorial other democratic o Some religious, some secular o Socialism and communism for community held property How terms entered American vocab o More liberal in sexual relationships o Religious community Attracted people who wanted refuge from sinful communities Shakers Zora, Ohio 1840’s 5,000 members from Maine to KY Founded by Mother Anne Lee in 1800’s in England Both sexes are spiritually equal
