Securing Independence 2/23/11 New army faces greatest military force in the world British felt they would crush traitors early o In British favor o Most powerful navy o Great general America had ill-trained militia Some Americans were loyalists o Population was broken into thirds Patriots Loyalists Supporters of nothing Rebels had home field advantage 1775-1783 200,000 men and women fighting for cause o Young men with no economic prospects o Women dressed as men o Slaved and freed blacks To conquer 13 colonies British knew it would be expensive o Soldiers plundered homes o Sexual assaults o Didn’t instill fear in citizen, but caused distain and hatred Colonists needed allies o France, wanted British defeat o Possibly Spain British mistake by Howe o Defeats in first years of war o Abandons Boston o Summer 1776 attacks NY Washington defends Brooklyn Howe pushes back America to island of Manhattan Washington escapes but leaves some men back and they are captured
