Lecture 9: The Life Cycle 14:14 Stem Cells Biology  o Three main properties  Divde and replicate Unspecialized Give rise to specialized cells (ex: nerve tissue) under special conditions o Two types – embryonic and adult Embryonic problems Tumors Potential rejection of donor cells Moral/ethical dilemma Controversy o In 2006 the republican controlled congress voted to lift restrictions on  stem cell research and authorize federal funding derive new embryonic  stem-cell lines from frozen fertilized eggs tagged for destruction On 7/19/06 Bush used his first veto to override a congressional Bill that  extended the scope of embryonic stem cell research Congressed failed to gain a 2/3 majority to override the presidential  veto. o Alternative Research Initiatives Federal regulations apply only to the use of Federal funds for  embryonic stem cell research States and other countries filled the void left by federal limitation on  funding Private companies are also beginning to step in. they are unregulated  specifically regarding stem cell research, but they are quite sensitive to  public opinion.  o In N.J – it was placed on the ballot that they were looking for $450 million.  The ballot question was defeated with 53% opposing it History of Policy Recent developments o Recent U.S Stem cell policy
