Diana Joy’s Notes Investor Relations Terminology Stock: Ability to sell pieces of ownership to people Share: One increment of ownership in company IPO: Initial Public Offering, private-public Secondary: Another offering of stock to raise capital Stock Exchange: Institution that enables buying and selling of stock Broker: Buys and sells shares in companies on behalf of other people Analyst: Studies industries and publishes reports and makes recommendations on stocks E-Trading: Anyone can buy and sell stock with bank account Investor: Buys stocks/bonds Institutional Investor: Large organizations that have a lot of money to invest (churches, insurance companies, banks, foundations) 401K Plan: Take some of pay and put in your 401k so you’re not taxed Bonds: Debt financing obligates company to pay you back Disclosure: Giving out information Mandated Disclosure: Have to disclose and announce information, loss of money have to tell Earnings per share (ESP): Evaluate performance of company quarter to quarter, year to year
