HIS-144 Darwinism and American Society In the turn of the 19 th century the theory of evolution of species was being exposed thanks to Charles Darwin. Darwin came up with the theory that species came from natural selection and biology, challenging the narrative that we came from supernatural happenings and the biblical story of creation. (Shultz, 2015) Many Americans rejected this theory or any idea that involved our species being evolved from a lower species. They also rejected this theory because it challenged their belief and knowledge of life, they believed that we were all created by the one and only God. God created species out of all his love for his creations and saying that we were created through a natural process eliminates this factor. According to Darwinism, natural selection made it possible for those species who had superior characteristics to fight for success and then pass these strong characteristics to their descendants.
