2 Running Head:  Alan Mulally, CEO, Ford Motor Company 1. Discuss the role of leadership and how it can impact organizational performance. Today, like never before, organizations especially in the business tend to change rapidly. In fact, globalization has increased the markets and opportunities in order for more growth and revenue. Nevertheless, different markets must rely on a variety of needs and expectations from the individuals that lead them. These varieties of needs are usually created and structured so that everyone is on the same pathway. In essence, it is essential for leadership to be structure because it can eventually impact organizational performance in a positive or negative connotation. In result, these impacts can cause an organization to fail or succeed. Assessing organizations in today’s workforce, there is no ideal set of characteristics or traits that categorize a leader. According to Vecchio and Appelbaum, leadership is a process through which a person tries to get others in the organization to do what he or she wants (Vecchio, 1995). It has been set that the idea of leadership influences members to achieve goals set by the company in order to achieve satisfaction. According to Katzenbach, the ideal vision of the organization encompasses a conceptualization of the change effort which is essentially impacted by leadership and has a domino effect on performance (Katzenbach, 1996). Leadership in a social aspect is termed as an art. Like other arts it requires good technique and self- expression (Hellriegel, 2011). While most of these techniques of: intelligence, maturity and breath, achievement drive, and integrity (Hellriegel, 2011), leader may encompass some all all of these charcteristics. Although these key traits have been noted in great successful leaders, there are several reasons why these traits can lead to be ineffective because of how they may be carried out or because most times the success of a great leader can be based on personality, physical appearance and essentially confident to carry out the task. There are several leadership styles and essentially they all must develop a plan or a set or goal that fit the readiness of their group. In terms this means that leadership does not stand for what an individual does but the effects of his actions carried out. 2. Discuss Mulally’s leadership style at Ford Motor Company and provide examples of how his actions fit this style.
