Black Athletes Fact & Fiction  (NBC News Video) - Introduction - Is the reason Black athletes dominate the major sports (baseball, basketball, and football) in the USA  because they are genetically superior physically (biological reasons) or because other economic opportunities  are closed to them, so they choose athletics (social/cultural reasons). - Black dominate the major sports - 75% of the players in professional basketball (NBA) are Black - 63% of pro football players are Black - Over one-third of the starts in pro baseball are Black - Most top boxers are Black - Theories on why above is true when Blacks are only 10% of the population. - Biological Superiority Theory - Blacks have longer arms and legs, a denser skeletal system, and carry less fat on their arms and  legs than Whites.  Also Blacks have more fast-twitch muscles and more of the enzyme that  allows the body to store and use energy in the muscles.  This allows Blacks to excel in fast,  powerful (explosive) movements such as running and jumping. (The types of activities needed  for football, basketball, and baseball.) - Socio-cultural Theory - Blacks excel in the high paying sports (football, basketball, and baseball) because other high  paying economic opportunities are not open to them due to prejudice and racism.  Also, their role  models are athletes, so they aspire to be athletes too.  Their athletic dominance has nothing to do  with biological differences, but has to do with hard work - History - The first time a Black athlete won the 100 meters in the Olympic Games was in the Los Angeles  Olympics in 1932.  - Now, Blacks dominate the sprints.  Of the top 25 times in 100 meters, 23 of them are by Black athletes.  - Before Kip Keyno won the 1500 meters in the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games, it was thought that  Blacks did not have the courage or intellectual capacity or run the distances races.  - Now Blacks dominate both the sprints and the distance events in track. - In the Seoul, Korea Olympic Games, Blacks won every running event except the marathon and in that  race they came in second and third.  - Basketball is an inner city game.  The dominant minority group in the inner city is the group that  dominates basketball. - 50 years ago, Jewish players dominated basketball.  “It was thought that every Jewish boy was born  with a basketball in his hands.” - When Black and Jewish teams played each other, the Black team was described as a fast moving team  and the Jewish team was described as a scheming, thinking team.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
