Fugitt 1 Amanda Fugitt Professor Donald English 1301 24 October 2010 A Good Heart The literature that I chose for my essay is “Rip Van Winkle”. It is written by Washington Irving. This story is fiction. The story's setting is in New York's Catskill Mountains. Even though Rip was a failure as a farmer, he was a success as a human being. Even if we are not successful at our job, we are not necessarily bad human beings. Rip lived at the foot of the Catskill Mountains. He cared more for his neighbors than he did his own self. Rip would make the children toys and tell them stories. He ran errands and did odd jobs for the housewives. Nobody had a sour word to say about Rip, except for his wife, Dame. When it came time for Rip to tend to his own chores, he was of little use. The only plants that thrived on his farm were weeds. Dame scolded him often. She would remind him of his failings as a farmer. Rip walked outside to get away from her discouraging words. He would often go to a village group to tell stories and discuss events of the town.
