There will be time to murder and create, And time for all the works and days of hands That lift and drop a question on your plate; Time for you and time for me, And time yet for a hundred indecisions, And for a hundred visions and revisions. Before the taking of toast and tea. This quotation from Eliot’s poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” represents one of the many thoughts running through Prufrock’s head before attending a social event. He is questioning everything he is doing and reassuring himself that everything would go well. This questioning of him is due to his self-conscientiousness and social anxieties. By questioning and reassuring his own self repeatedly to be sure he looks and acts personable is his way of comforting himself. Prufrock’s insecurities about how he looks represent his uncertainties deep within. His low self-confidence is causing him to over- analyze everything from his physique to his own thoughts. However, he does seem to be well aware of his insecurities and indecisiveness and realizes that although they are a bit extreme, they do make him feel better at the end of the day. He tells himself that there is plenty of time for everything before the day is over, so he need not worry. 2. Why you’re one of my babies. You’re one of my own children. This quotation from O’Connor’s "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is part of a somewhat life-changing transformation that the grandmother went through during her unfortunate encounter with The Misfit. This story conveys the message that there is a likelihood of drastic transformations happening to people at any point in their lives, especially when they experience something so horrifying and/or out of the ordinary. This quotation at the end of the poem is when the grandmother suddenly felt close to
