TRUST BOARD MEETING – 1 SEPTEMBER 2005 VERTICAL INTEGRATION Introduction This paper is designed to briefly set out the arguments for LTHT being prepared to take an increasingly proactive interest in Vertical Integration and recommends that the Trust should see this as potentially an important part of its future strategy. Terminology Vertical Integration is the term currently applied in Healthcare to describe the integration of services across hospital and community boundaries. Perhaps the best current example of this thinking is the development of Patient Pathways. It is widely accepted that Vertical Integration has the potential to provide significantly improved patient care whilst making economic sense. It is the underlying principal of “Making Leeds Better”. Background There is therefore a strong measure of agreement about the shape of future services. There is also some measure of agreement about the mix of staff which will be required to provide them and a growing acceptance that there will be a need not only for organisations but for individuals to work differently
