Students placed at- risk are those in danger of failing to complete their education with the skills necessary to survive in modern society (Slavin, Karweit, & Madden, 1989). The at risk students I chose to write about is bullying. Bullying a more subtle form of school violence, bullying, is receiving increased attention, as educators are realizing its damaging effects on students, as well as possible links to suicide and school shootings. One U.S. Secret Service study found bullying to be a factor in two thirds of school shooting incidents (Viadero, 2003d). Another study found that both bullies and victims were more likely to carry a weapon, bring it to school, and become involved in serious fights (Viadero, 2003e). Recent research, however, links bullying to a number of antisocial and aggressive behaviors that can have negative consequences for both bullies and victims. People who bully take advantage of imbalances in power, such as greater size or physical strength, higher status, or the support of a peer group.
