GENETICS 3 What is the significance of the first and last codons of an mRNA transcript? Explanation: The first codon acts as initiation codon for initiating a chain of amino acid in the m-RNA. The sequence for initiation is usually denoted by ATG and AUG (Audesirk, T., Audesirk, G., & Byers, B. E., 2011). The ATG codon is responsible for methionine inside the eukaryotes. This mainly works as the start codon. However, when the m-Rna transcript , UAG ("amber") UAA ("ochre") UGA ("opal") comes, it stops all further synthesis (Audesirk, T., Audesirk, G., & Byers, B. E., 2011). This is what makes it the termination codon. The initiate codon initiate the process of translation. The stop codon are sequences that take place where the translation procedure stop for terminating the sequence of synthesized amino acids.
