Students Rights and Teacher Responsibilities There are many responsibilities that teachers have. Teachers are here for the safety of each student. We need to provide a healthy learning environment for every single body that walks into our school. However, students should be able to have some of their rights with boundaries set. Boundaries are set to ensure that the students are able to express themselves in a safe manner. There are many topics that you see being debated. The biggest debatable topic would be between “student news articles and freedom of speech” and “random student locker searches without permission”. Safety in our educational institutions is an important topic, but there is always a trade-off between safety and individual rights. Rules that improve our safety generally restrict our personal freedoms. We have a right to “freedom of speech”, that right is also restricted to protect our safety. Random locker searches are intended to provide for the safety of the students, but at the same time they infringe upon the rights and freedoms of the students that the policy is intended to protect.
