Each particle has an electrical charge and a mass (the amount of matter in a given sample) associated with it. Early experiments have shown that the protons and neutrons are located in the center of the atom in the nucleus . The electrons surround the nucleus. Subatomic Particle Charge Mass proton +1 1.6726217 x 10 -24 g electron -1 9.109383 x 10 -28 g neutron 0 1.6749273 x 10 -24 g Note : 1 atomic mass unit (amu) = 1.6605389 x 10 -24 g 1. Calculate the mass of each subatomic particle in amu. Proton: 1.6726217 x 10 -24 g (1 amu/1.6605389 x 10 -24 g) = 1.0072764 amu Electron: 9.109383 x 10 -28 g (1 amu/1.6605389 x 10 -24 g) = 5.486134 x 10 -4 amu Neutron: 1.6749273 x 10 -24 g (1 amu/1.6605389 x 10 -24 g) = 1.0086649 amu 2. Which subatomic particle is the heaviest? The lightest? The neutron is the heaviest and the electron is the lightest. 1

3. In general, which subatomic particles account for the mass of an atom based on the information given? The neutrons and the protons. 4. Calculate the ratio of the mass of a proton compared to an electron. 1.6726217 x 10 -24 g/9.109383 x 10 -28 g = 1836.153 5. If an electron were a golf ball (mass = 45.9 g), what would be the mass of the proton? (For perspective, a 12 pound bowling ball has a mass of 5443.1 g.) 1836.153 x 45.9 g = 843 kg 6. Do electrons contribute significantly to the mass of an atom? Explain. No. They are so small compares to the protons and neutrons that they do not contribute significant mass. 7.
