Lab 1-Problem 4: Deflection of an Electron by an Electric Field Problem Description: Determining how a change in an applied electric field affects the electron beam. We need to determine the amount of deflection of electrons going a certain velocity when they are under an electric field and how the amount of voltage applied to the field relates to the amount of deflection. Prediction: The increasing levels of voltage applied will result in proportional changes in the path of the electron beam. When this is tested, our resulting data after the experiment will back up our equations. I believe we will find that our equations for the amount of offset of the electron beam will be proven because our predicted values should match our actual values closely. The equations mentioned above can be found in the data section. Procedure: First we gained access to necessary materials, which include: a Cathode Ray Tube, a power supply between 250V and 500V, for the CRT and another power supply with adjustable voltage to be applied to the metal plate for an adjustable electric field. We assembled and connected the power supplies correctly, so that the power to the CRT which powers the electron beam was 250V between the cathode and the anode and the power to the deflection plates was adjustable in voltage.
