Why study situational approaches to leadership? “The focus in situational approaches to leadership is on the observed behavior of leaders and their group members in various situations. This emphasis on behavior and environment allows for the possibility that individuals can be trained to adapt their style of leader behavior to varying situations. Therefore, it is believed that most people can increase their effectiveness in leadership roles through education, training, and development. Based on observations of the frequency (or infrequency) of certain leader behaviors in a variety of situations, models can be developed to help leaders make some predictions about the most appropriate leader behavior for their present situation.” (text, p.94). Also, Chester Schriesheim, James Tolliver, and Orlando Behling noted that “the literature supports the basic notion that a situational view is necessary to portray accurately the complexities of the leadership process.” (text, p.94) Victor Vroom
