Concepts o Maximal O2 uptake rises as children age.  This is largely the  result of increases in size of VO2-dependent organs (heart,  lungs, blood volume, skeletal muscle). o Mean gender differences in VO2max are very small before  puberty, but values in males are consistently greater than in  females o Improvements in VO2max occur in children after a period fo  endurance training.  These increases are less than those  expected in adults. o The training stimulus typically used for adults is insufficient to  produce reliable training effects in children.  Anaerobic  threshold is a better training target than 60% of HRR.

Flow of O 2 o Driven by a series of pressure gradients  that begin at n The external gas exchanger – the lungs n Pumped in a transporting medium – blood n Bound to hemoglobin n Released at the internal gas exchanger –  capillary – cell interface n Consumed in the O 2  “sink” – the mitochondria.
