In order to successfully complete this week's assignments, read the following chapters from Crime Prevention in America : Chapter One – “The History of Crime Prevention in the United States” (This reading discusses law enforcement and crime prevention from the 1800's through present day.) Chapter Two – “The News Media's Coverage of Crime and Victimization” (The focus of this chapter is the analysis of information regarding victim privacy versus the public's right to know.) Chapter Three – “Media Consumption and Public Attitudes toward Crime and Justice: National Victim Assistance Academy, Anne Seymour, 2002” (This reading provides a discussion about the legal system and the influence of the media.) Wickersham Commission Review of law enforcement by the Wickersham Commission revealed issues with corruption, lack of training, and standards for police recruits.
