Exercise 17: Nervous system made up of two principle populations o Neurons and supporting cells (Neuroglia or glial cells ) Neuroglia in CNS: Schwann cells and satellite cells Neuroglia in PNS: astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia, ependymal Neuroglia functions: - Brace and protect neurons - Phagocytes - Mylinate the cytoplasmic extensions of neurons - Capillary-neuron exchanges - Chemical environment around neurons - *Not capable of generating and transmitting nerve impulses like neurons can NEURON ANATOMY o *Neurons are basic functional units of nervous tissue o *found in nuclei or occasionally in ganglia (collections of neuron cell bodies outside CNS, make up grey matter) o Neuron processes in CNS make up tracts of white matter , in PNS make up peripheral nerves o Neurofibrils: support and transport o Nissl Bodies: type of rough ER, metabolic activities of cell o Dendrites (neuron can have many) o Axon (may have branches called collaterals) (neuron can only have one)
