(ALL are BACTERIAL) Causative agent Viru lenc e Fact ors Vector, Reservoir, Transmission Symptoms Treatment and Prevention Other RHEUMATIC FEVER Group A beta-hemolytic Streptococci Follows a streptococcal infection, like streptococcal sore throat Arthritis, fever, inflammation of heart valves *can lead to permanent heart damage *nodules that appear at joints Treatment: Mostly supportive Prevention: Penicillin to treat streptococcal sore throats *autoimmune complication of streptococcus pyrogenes infections *antibodies against group A beta hymolytic streptococci react with streptococcal antigens in heart or joints ANTHRAX Bacillus anthracis *gram positive endospore forming aerobic rod - Two Exo toxi ns: *E dem a toxi n: loca l swel ling *Let hal toxi n: kills mac roph ages *Pr otec tive Anti gen: bind s toxi ns to Reservoir: soil and grazing mammals Transmission: Direct contact, ingestion, inhalation Cutaneous: papule Gastrointestinal: bloody diarrhea Inhalational: septic shock Treatment: Ciproflocacin or doxycycline Progression: Initiated by endospores-> takenup by macrophages-> germinate and divide -> Kill macrophage -> Enter bloodstream-> Replicate rapidly-> Release toxins-> Septic shock and death CUTANEOUS ANTHRAX: -90% of human cases -endospores enter through minor cut -characteristic ulcer with black scab -20% mortality (1% with treatment) GASTROINTESTINA L ANTHRAX: -ingestion of undercooked
