Are WLANs secure? Wireless local area networks, or WLANs as they are commonly known, have been a topic of discussion with regards to just how secure they really are. These networks have come a long way in the years since their inception, but many people still worry about the possible breach of security within them. So the real question becomes: Just how secure are WLANs today and why are they that way? Obviously the first question many people would have is why even have a WLAN? WLANs are the perfect medium to provide and improve connectivity for a local area without the cost of installation of wiring to multiple areas. Its ease of use with having no wires is also a huge benefit over the standard wired systems. These are obvious benefits of a WLAN system, but with every positive, a negative will appear somewhere. The problem with a WLAN is that since it is wireless, the radio waves it uses to transmit information cover a much broader area than that of a cable imbedded in a wall or ceiling.
