AT&T is a large company with a broad market share in the communications industry. While AT&T is a popular name today, many people are unaware of the company’s roots. AT&T’s history really starts with the invention of the telephone by Alexander Bell back in 1876. In 1877, the Bell Telephone Company was created and is the first predecessor to what is now known today as AT&T. They created the first national and international long-distance call capabilities and instituted 911 as a nationwide emergency system. In January of 1984, the Bell System was broken up by an anti-trust lawsuit. This lawsuit broke the Bell System up into seven Regional Bell Operating Companies and the American Telephone & Telegraph Corporation (AT&T). In 2000, the company split into three new companies: AT&T Wireless, AT&T Broadband, and AT&T. In January of 2005, the Southwestern Bell Corporation (SBC) purchased AT&T for more than 16 billion dollars. After being approved by the government, the merger was finalized in November of 2005.
