Week 5(8) DISCUSSION White Bears Review -metacognition/meta language -whenever you tell yourself to stop thinking of the white bear, the object is still there -control group – just think about white bears (p.3-4) -tend to ring bell about 12 times -experimental group part 1 – don’t think about white bears (suppression, p.3-4) -tend to ring bell about 6 times -better than thinking about white bears overall -experimental group part 2 – think about white bears as often as you want (after suppression) -tend to ring bell about 16 times -this is the rebound effect 1) obviously higher than suppression 2) also higher than control -is higher cuz of “contexts” = subjects associate everything in the room with white bears -room suddenly super associated with white bears think about white bears more often -the thing about not thinking about something is metacognition, which makes it kind of like you’re thinking about the thing double the amount -volkswagon study – looks a lot more like the control group
