Week 5(9) DISCUSSION Mindfulness Review -patient by any other name – importance of labels & how they can affect our thinking -premature cognitive commitments – impacts your future behavior -a 2x2 study – 2 different groups of ppl – all clinicians -a video shown of a man with a clipboard taking notes while he talks to another man -half of the participants told that the man was a patient, while the other half was told that the man was a job applicant -the participants were clinicians – half were traditionally trained (with labels for diagnoses) while the other half were specifically trained to avoid labels -specifically trained participants saw almost no difference (saw the patient/applicant as doing well), whereas the traditionally trained clinicians thought patient was not doing well but participant doing well -this is us – we naturally do this (are naturally biased) -nursing home study -give ppl more control w/their lives better adjusted -opportunities to increase choices
