Not everyone is a born leader, and not everyone is a born follower, but for a team to work, trust must be built and each member must be willing and able to do the things needed to achieve that goal. Therefore, it is important to place an emphasis on team development in any organization, as working in teams is how things get done. We’ve all been in a situation where our leader says “we’re going to do some team development” and our minds immediately go to that of Michael Scott of The Office showing us the wrong way to team build, but in reality team development is critical to the success of individuals and managers alike. Team development builds trust, mitigates conflict, encourages communication, and increases collaboration. Effective team development means more engaged employees, which is good for company culture and increasing efficiencies. If the goal of team development is to effect real behavior change and enable improved and sustained team performance it is important to understand the stages of team development.
