OPTION #2: IMPACT OF EMOTIONS ON DECISION MAKING 2 Option #2: Impact of Emotions on Decision Making A good leader is able to identify and research alternative decisions by utilizing a robust and data driven decision-making process, making the best decision based on the data available. Organizations will inevitably benefit from good leaders who make informed decisions, as those decisions are more likely to have a positive impact on the organization. Further, good leaders possess a good understanding and the ability to apply emotional intelligence (EQ) to the decision making process. This paper will provide a brief summary of the attributes associated with EQ and how one can embody each of these attributes. Additionally, this paper will develop a plan to increase motivation, satisfaction, and performance in the workplace through the use of foundational principles associated with emotional intelligence. Finally, this paper will provide an analysis of the potential advantages and disadvantages of the author’s plan. What is Emotional Intelligence? Emotional intelligence (EQ) is can be defined as “the ability, capacity, skill, or self- perceived ability to identify, assess, and manage the emotions of one’s self, of others, and of groups. People who possess a high degree of emotional intelligence know themselves very well and are also able to sense the emotions of others.” (Serrat, 2017, para 5). People who possess a high level of EQ are often sociable, strong, and enthusiastic towards their own feelings and the feelings of others (Petrides et al, 2016). Individuals whom work to evolve their EQ are often more productive than counterparts, achieve higher levels of success over time, and are able to assist those around them in becoming more motivated and productive (Lee & Chelladurai, 2018). In developing and applying EQ, many portions of the process work to lower stress levels for both individuals and organizations by reducing the amount of conflict, and providing a stable and

Having Self Awareness Step one in the EQ process is having self-awareness of one’s emotions and the impacts of those emotions on the decision making process (Mayer, Caruso, & Salovey, 2016).
