COMMUNICATION DEVELOPMENT IN INFANCY 2 Communication Development in Infancy Introduction Communication is regarded as one of the most significant parts of the human society and this is acquired during infancy although most of the families today are bilingual. In a typical society, the average child grows up in a bilingual family, which means that they are able to acquire two or more languages during language acquisition . Different universities and authors have carried out relevant research on the acquisition of language by children with most of these researches attributing this to different factors, as will be discussed. In most of the research that will be discussed here, the language acquisition by the children is based on the interactions that they have with their parents and other members of the community thus meaning that they have to acquire that given language to pass on different information (Gerry & Trainor, 2012). These interactions will include the signs and symbols that are directed towards the child of which the child is able to master and perfect most, which later translate to the acquisition of language. These researches that have been carried out also show that language acquisition requires innate perceptual and constructive mechanisms that help the adults to understand the child’s capability of internalizing and analyzing information. This is then used to determine the child’s capability of acquiring language as a way of communication, as will also be discussed. On the other hand, music is also linked to the acquisition of language by the children whereby children will prefer listening to different kinds of music thus helping them to understand their culture and how different words are pronounced. The use of music in language acquisition also helps to enhance the attentive skills within the child thus becomes important in the normal development of early communication skills. In language acquisition it is also important to understand that different children have different rates of language acquisition depending of their overall levels of

Although language acquisition may be a factor that is present in all infants, it is also important to point out that there some risk factors that hinder language development in infants, as will be discussed. The Issue The main issue that is to be discussed here is how infants are able to acquire language through the environment that they are exposed to. Research shows that different infants acquire language at different rates when influenced by different factor in the environment. In addition to the language rate being influenced by the environment, the environment also provides the language inputs that the child is able to acquire and process thus acquiring a given language (Haapsamo & Moilanen, 2013). When a child is exposed to an environment where the parents
