ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF VEGETARIANISM 2 Advantages and Disadvantages of Vegetarianism Introduction Vegetarianism is a practice that is mainly associated with individuals who do not consume any kind of meat but instead focus on a diet that is made from plants and vegetables. This includes sea food, red meat, white meat, and pork (Walker, 2010). In most cases, vegetarianism is associated with different medical conditions but in some cases, it has been associated with religious faith. In addition to these cases, vegetarianism has been adopted by some individual due to the respect that they have for sentient life thus believe that it is wrong to use animals for purposes of food production (Dorcak, 2011). Vegetarianism has been associated with different advantages for the people practicing but at the same time, it has been associated with several disadvantages. Advantages of Vegetarianism The first advantage of vegetarianism is that the amount of energy that is used to digest the plant products is lower than that used during the digestion if different animal products. This means that the body will use less effort during digestion thus saving the extra energy for other bodily functions (Bernardy, 2013). Most of the individuals associated with vegetarianism are considered to be very jovial and healthy considering that their body has enough energy to perform all the functions necessary. Secondly, vegetarianism is a modern way of whole body detoxification thus is important in the detoxification of the body to get rid of the toxins that are known to cause different diseases (Bernardy, 2013). In addition to the detoxification of the body system, vegetarianism helps to maintain a reasonable bodily weight thus most doctors will recommend the practice of vegetarianism for individuals intending to lose weight or intend to
