Nhi Nguyen Arizona College Dallas Campus NUR 213: Ethics & Legal Standards in Nursing Practice I Professor: Heidi Payton May 28, 2020 Do the physician and nurse have the right to refuse an elective abortion? Nurses have the ethical and moral obligation to protect and promote life. Current nursing dilemma lies in the right and responsibilities of nurses towards abortion versus the rights of patients choosing to abort. With the increasing legislative activity regarding abortion law in every state, nursing position is problematic in view of respecting patient rights and professional pro-life advocacy. The role and responsibility of the nurse as well as the rights of patients are supported within law, and within the ethical framework provided by the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (ANA, 2001). Access to abortion not only allows women to better control their fertility, but importantly, it also changes their expectations about childbearing and their control over it. As a result, women may invest more heavily in their own human capital, leading to increase schooling and improved labor market outcomes; this is true even for women who never have an unintended pregnancy. These benefits may extend beyond the cohorts of women who initially gained access to abortion, to subsequent generations of women and men. Abortion access not only had economic effects for
